View Full Version : Systemic Underperformance - could PSU be the issue?

I just upgraded my PC - new motherboard, processor, ram and graphics card:

*OVERCLOCKED* AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 3.80GHz
Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P Motherboard
Corsair XMS3 DHX 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600C9DHX
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

The first problem I noticed was some distortion in the icons in the system tray and quickstart. Playing Sims 3 the anti-aliasing was all wrong (ie the leaves on the trees became just a glowing green ball). I ran some performance benchmarks and in almost all categories the system is scoring 4-5 times lower than similar machines and in many cases, lower or only slightly higher than my old system. The HDD and disk drive, I expected to score lower than similar machines because they're old and still IDE, so I don't *think* theres a problem with them but its hard to tell.

Since the problem is systemic the only thing I could think would be the problem is PSU or MOBO, the MOBO is brand new and since the bundle came pre-assembled and overclocked, I assume its been tested and is ok. The power supply is a Jeantech JNP-500AP (500w). The online calculators said it would be plenty (calculated max usage as <400w) but I was sceptical. I went to the local PC repair shop to buy a new one and he only had 650w PSU's plus he said that power wasn't the problem and it wouldn't affect benchmarks (though I'm not 100% convinced he knew what he was talking about)

So could an inadequate powersupply allow the system to boot and run but consequently underperform in CPU, Graphics and Memory. If not, what could?

The power supply is one of the biggest factor that effect the performance in CPU, Graphics and Memory.etc.I think 650w is enough .Check out the temperature and air flow/cooling system, keep your video card drivers are up-to-date..and make sure directx 9.0c is installed.

I got it all sorted now, bios needed updating. I discounted anything to do with the new stuff because it was supposed to have been tested.
