I have a domain name that I have purchased
However I want this domain name to go to a particular folder on webspace that I have associated with a different domain:
Is this possible, where would I need to configure for this to happen?

The only thing I can think of is to aim your new domain name (the one you purchased)
to the same server as your other website. Then, on your other website, you set-up
a redirect. This happens on the control panel of your website, or ask your webhost.
Very similar to having a .com and .net pointing to the same website.
The final catch is to send the proper domain name to the proper directory.
I suppose that would be something in .htaccess?
What happens with search engines and SEO is beyond me (on this one).
If it were me, I would keep the websites separate ... since webhosting accounts are so
cheap these days, why not just have them as two separate sites?

Rewriting URLs is the way to go. A htaccess file with RewriteModule will easily send a 301 Moved Permenantly HTTP status code the browser and redirect you to the respective page on the other site.

Right, and sometimes your host provides something in the CPanel that allows you to do this without programming something. Perhaps asking your hosting provider or searching their documentation will help there.
