I'd like to know if there's a way to access the dos prompt without being in Windows.
I've heard that Windows Me doesn't have a real dos promt.
I have a disk with 900 levels of Doom on it. First I open the msdos prompt while in Windows. I typed in H:\D! and I get the GUI within the dos window asking where I want to copy the files to. I go through the step by step and finally when the program attempts to load from the C:\D! directory while in WinMe dos prompt always get a runtime error.
Does anyone know if I can get a genuine dos prompt before WinMe loads? I've tried holding the control key and that didn't work.
Please?
If no one can help me I'll be Doomed! :o

Hi there Justa®me,
and thanks for your really quick reply!
According to the link you provided the recommendation is to use a boot disk.
I'll let you know how ®it goes :)
If you're just after playing Doom, there is an easier way. :D
If you have Ultimate Doom, or Final Doom, they should come with a "Doom95" launcher, which is a Windows interface to loading it, and works under everything up through and including WinXP Pro SP1.
These levels... they are probably just custom wad files, no? Copy them all into a directory, then when you launch Doom95 point the custom wad directory to it and select it. Voila, instant Doom modification. :)

Hi JKD,
thanks for the reply.
How's it going btw?
Yep, I'm really into the game but have been frustrated in that there are only 2 Dooms I've ever been able to play:
Doom and Final Doom for PS1,
and of course the Doom shareware for dos.
Now I have a Gravis controller and it interfaces VERY well with Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 (Doom 95) for PC so I'm jazzed about that. One thing though is that the change weapon (L1,R1) won't work. I've typed in the 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 7,6,5,4,3,2,1 keys on the Gravis contoller but no go.
I can play the Doom 2 on my PC with as you say the interface.
I've tried your idea and copied the wad files into the same directory as the Doom 2 wads, and I can see them when I launch the iinterface, but when I try to play just one of those levels it gives me an error of "bad music".
There must be a way I can play these hundreds of levels I've got with the D! discs but I just haven't been able to.
I'll try to look for the "custom wad" file option when I get home from work but I'm pretty sure I did it right when I tried last.
Am I missing something?

just a lookin'® forward to reading thattt ya got it just a working® no matter whichhh method worked for ya...:O)))
It's going good. :)
Bad music? Weird. I recently copied all the WAD files off my "Master Levels for Doom II" cd I dug up a while ago into a "Custom WAD" directory, and then pointed the "Custom WAD File" drop down to it. Worked perfectly. Make sure that the main game itself is the one you want. e.g. Doom2 mods need to have the DOOM2.wad file selected above it.

Glad you're a Doomer JKD.
Seems like I'm in pretty good hands now :)
If I choose Doom2 or Doom as the Game Wad file, and select a Custom Wad , there's still an Episode/Level listing from the selected Game Wad which it defaults to when I click on New Game .
If I select "None" for the Game Wad, sure, the levels go away but then when Doom95 loads you can see the processing in green below the Doom Logo which then stutters at the line: Loading sound something something or other and then I get the "Bad music number 152" error message.
I must be missing something simple.
One note is that at the begining while just loading Doom 95 I get an alert window which says that my program has been altered whch doesn't make any sense since I have an original disc.
Running a custom wad against a game wad will pop up the "modified" message... or do you mean just opening the Doom95 launcher?
Try this beast out:

I just got it, and now Doom supports my uber USB mouse and can be run with OpenGL instead of software rendering. :)
It is a little less obvious to run custom wads, but you can find it by going into "Single Map"

I downloaded it, extracted it to my Doom2 folder, tried loading a custom wad using the "Single Map" feature, but it was unable to recognize the path even though I typed it in perfectly.
In fact, it didn't recognize any path.
Is there anything I can do so I can play these other levels from the D! ?
Start from scratch?
Something?
Anything?
Perplexed? Yup, sure am :(
But hopeful I remain. :)

Once a DOOMer, always a DOOMer!!
In fact, that's what's killin' me, I can't play all those levels that I haven't played before.
I've been through Doom and Final Doom for Playstation over and over. That's all there is for me till I can get this other stuff working like I know it can.
Hope I don't have to wait all the ways till October for Doom III.

Just absolutely frustrated!
I've done everything right.
When I try to load a single map using the Legacy Launcher, it has to use a main Game wad (of course). It uses the Doom2.wad file and just loads whatever map I highlight in the Start Map drop down which are just the Doom 2 levels. Even though I select an add on wad file (which is on of the many new .wad files I have), it doesn't recognize it I guess.
What am I doing wrong???
