I am currently designing and writing a small school website. When it is finished the head and staff need to be able to update with pics and events. What is the best way to go about this.

Unless the staff members are HTML-savvy (which I doubt, if they're having you build the site rather than doing it themselves) you are probably looking at using a Content Management System (CMS).

These are PHP-driven modular systems that allow users to update content without wrecking design. Common choices seem to be Joomla, Drupal, and CMS Made Simple. Honestly, I have not yet used any of these as I am just starting to dabble in PHP and CMS systems so I can't recommend one for certain. They all receive pretty good press though, so any of them should work reasonably well.
