hi

If i have only two systems and i want to make network connections between these two without a hub,
is it possible?
If yes, how to do this.
note that i have two ethernet cards in each system.
I have connected these two cards but still no connection.
OS: win98

You have to use a crossed RJ45 twist pair cable

What you're looking for is called a "Crossover cable", if you make your own you have to worry about the odd pairings required to make it properly but if you're going to buy one just look for a "Crossover cable".

If you're gonna make it yourself, here's a pic of how it should look. You'll also need to buy caps and crimpers. I'd suggest just buying a crossover tho. It'll be cheaper and easier.

note also that in order to network (share one internet connection) you need the second edition of win98. Open your browser on the comp with the net connection, click tools, internet options, connections and there should be a button that says shared (or something like that.. been a while since 98). That's where you set which ethernet card is the net and which is the lan.

Best of Luck

I found with my network, selecting add/remove programs -> windows components -> internet connection sharing, was the easiest way of setting up a shared connection. I'd guess it's alot easier with XP...

Actually here is the difference...

98 will require two nic's because it cannot setup an internal bridge/route whereas XP can with one nic...

If you connect the modem with USB it can be done with 1 nic per machine.
