I am setting up a VDS (virtual dedicated server) and when setting up the server I can setup the ip as either shared or dedicated. Obviously I understand the difference in the words but what are the advantages of each. I have googled and haven't really seen any clear. So why would I choose one or the other?

Some say that a dedicated IP will provide a better result in the search engines. As "guit by association" is true if there happens to be a site on your IP that has an issue, you may get some residual effect.
I pick dedicated when I have the option.

When you get dedicated IP, it's only for your sites- you don't share it with other sites on the same server. On the other hand, shared IP means an IP address is shared among several sites on the same server.
One disadvantage of shared IP is that your site can be affected, when an unrelated site using the same IP does something wrong and is blocked.
If you ever want to use an SSL cert, you will need a dedicated IP.
