E.g. Facebook supposedly offering Twitter 500 million.

What gives it a good value like this?

Is it the fact that you have direct access to millions of people?

Or just because it's some sort of competition?

the idea of what they do, first of all, the content after that, and finaly the way how is done or implemented.

Thanks for the reply.

But I'm trying to find out why it would be worth this much to the buyer.

I know what you mean about the content, but if it was something like Twitter.

Why would it be worth that much?

Is it the potential for advertisements?

It's the advertsing potential combined with the need to stop a rival buying it. I heard the head (I think) of twitter say on bbc click that they would rather stay independent. that is either an attempt to force an increase to the offer or maybe a mistake. its good to fatten a turkey for the festive meal but only if someone will buy it. otherwise you lose most of its value.

my 2c.

I really don't understand why the site is so popular. Everyone says its the status updates but one can do the same in Facebook. So how is it different?

That is the EXACT same thing I've been saying to people.

You could do that with Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, and lots more before Twitter was used for it.

So why has Twitter succeeded?

My guess is simplicity.
