I know this isn't exactly a web design question.
But, if I were to register for example the domain name iloveMacDonalds.com or CocaColaIsCool.com would I be violating MacDonalds' or Coca Cola's trademarks because their name is in the domain ?

NO! People do it all the time! Like www.kfcrecipes.com. Or have you seen how many fan sites of everything there are! I mean, technically, it’s illegal but there are many loop holes that help people who want these domains. Like: It is very possible that your name is McDonald and you just want a site for you and your family. Or you have a business (other than a restaurant) that uses that same name. Or, you buy, then re-sell domains! Owning the domain should not be a problem, but DO NOT display this companies logo or other materials on your site without permission! This will surely piss them off and you’ll have a lot of problems on you hands. These companies shouldn’t have a problem with your site as its practically free advertising for them, although they may give you some guidelines, such as no offensive material, no advertising, bla bla bla! So, go ahead, have fun!
