My bro has bought a server by Compaq from ebay, I don't know the make or model of it. All he got was the server, no cables or anything. After a monitor and keyboard is plugged in, we boot the server up, power goes to the monitor, but it only puts the monitor into the 'stand-by' mode. The keyboard light's up for 1/2 - 1 second, then seems to turn off by itself, so nothing works.
Is there a 'special' keyboard, monitor or even power cable you need to use the server? The power cable we're using is one that's from a PC.
Have no idea what OS it's running on either, whether it's M$ or Unix
If you need anymore info, I could try to dig it up for you

Have you tried opening the server and reseating all the major components (Processor(s), Memory, PCI/EISA Cards, Drive Arrays, Hard Drives (if hotswappable), Power Supplies and Fans (Compaq servers are finiky if jostled too much during shipping))...
Also, you need to hit the compaq website and see if you can obtain the smart start utility so that you can configure your drive array...

 @ junkyard wars... robot wars is more suited to it :p
Might've found the problem out, the person my bro got it from thinks he's put a wrong vga driver (or something) in, so he's sending us that to try

What do you mean you don't know what model/type etc the server is?
Surely the server still has it's model & serial number plates still attached. If you looked for them and they aren't present then get rid of that box as fast as possible, it's most likely been stolen.

tbh I never looked to see what it is on panels or whatever, never used a server before, so never thought of looking on the panels :o
