Is there a way to make an irregular shaped image have a transparent background using photoshop? I'd like to place it on a web page that has a background image. I'd like the entire background image visible except for this image placed on it. It seems the image w/ transparent background, the way I edited it, still displays as rectangular covering the design on the background image with.

Sure, have a look: http://www.mediacollege.com/adobe/photoshop/transparent/background.html
Note that IE6 and below does not support transparency in images from default.

Not entirely correct: IE6 doesn't support alpha-channel transparency, the kind used in many transparent PNGs. It does support regular on/off transparency, like in transparent GIFs.

FYI, there's a JavaScript fix (http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/) to give IE6 the ability to display alpha-channel transparency, but there are still some limitations (described in the link).

Hi, Thank you for the reply. I followed the directions in the link you provided. It's a great site. I still have the problem though. I think it's because my background image is not a solid color and the graphic image falls on top of the black lines /part of the design for the background image. I have prepared my code and images if you'd like to take a look. I also noticed the media college site encourages questions.
Please let me know if it would be helpful to see the code and images. If so could you reply with how to enclose the code and the images. thank you again!
