Anyone that knows anything about Windows 2000 Server and anything about Windows 2000 Pro, please reply to this post.

For my server's sake, I might be forced to switch to Windows 2000 Server, and I will only do this is I can be sure about a few things.

I want to know how different it is from Windows 2000 Pro.

Does it look the same? (I hate the XP look, and they way they lay out alot of their information) Windows 2000 Server will hopfully look like Windows 2000 Pro, I am too use to how this looks and how information is layed out so my programs and settings wont be affected.

Preformance:
If I can run one game on Pro, can I run the same game on Server? How much of a differance is there? Say I want to play Counter Strike, will I still be able to?

There are many other simple things that I can list that might be changed but I believe I can deal with most of them.

I mostly want to know about LARGE changs I can't change or prevent and that I will have to deal with if I switch...

Anyone?

(Too my coffee tonight, sorry if I said something that sounds wrong/spelt wrong/said wrong.)

Main difference between server and pro (which do look exactly alike) is that they handle the processor differently and that server comes with the Server Side utilities... Also server alows for you to setup an active directory so that pc's can connect to you whereas pro only allows for you to setup a workgroup unless you are connecting to a domain or active directory...

Thank you, sage45.

Now that you answered the one question I needed to know, I have the last question that I need answered!

Can I still play games on it?

While I have never tried it... I am pretty sure you can since they use the same kernel...

I have gone back to windows 2000 Pro.
Windows 2000 Server is not allowing me to run NAV 2003 or my NU 2001.

It's also very weird, and I don't trust it...

I am not saying I wouldn't use this as a dedicated server OS, but for my site, and my personal computer, I will stick with Pro...

I will just have to disobey my licence agreement... Not a big deal...

I am a IT Coordinator and run two networks on windows 2000 server. Windows 2000 server is ment to be a server - that's about it. Playing games or using extensive software not ment for networking is not recommended. That's why the servers sit there and you use workstations. I hope this helps. If you can get another computer and use one as the server and get the workstation networked with it (which isn't very hard) that would be cool. You could probably set up processor share too.

Windows Server is also not multi workstation user based, you can not set up and manage users the same as you can with the normal windows 2000 pro.

You can say that again.
