Hello, I tried to use some asp/php scripts on my C:/ and nothing happened. I assumed this is because it is server-side and I probably would not have support for it. Is there anyway I can get support for asp and php scripts on my C:/?

Hi there,
Our php moderator Firepages has built a package called phpdev that allows you to use php, mysql and the apache server on your pc. I'm not sure about ASP support as generally apache doesn't like ASP and ISS doesn't like PHP.
I recommend trying it: http://www.firepages.com.au/

Don't automatically suggest forgetting a programming language, you don't know what he needs it for.
It might be better to tell him advantages over the other, but that could and probibly would raise large arguments over these forums.
I beleive it might be better for him to learn php if he doesn't want to spend alot of time worring about IIS. I use IIS and as I was getting started I had to work with the server alot trying to get it running right. But I am now passed that and all works 110% better then any server before it.
I also suggest learning the web programming language that has any conection to other languages you might know. ASP and VB are very close. PHP and C++ are very close.
But I would not listen to Spookster if he doesn't give you any other reasons then just "yes".

Well Spookster is the PHP forum moderator and he also posted a :D which should indicate he's just kidding but it's easy to overlook that and assume something else was meant.
Of course to me it looks like the initial problem is that mattover-matter simply loaded some scripts onto his hard drive and is trying to browse them via the file system. In that case the proper response is that Web Server software is needed to make those scripts usable, the web server takes the request for the script and notes that it requires processing by the appropriate script engine and hands the request to the script engine which then runs the script to create an output page for the browser.
Since he has no experience with either language the choice between them should probably be based on what he expects to accomplish, where he expects to host the finished scripts (unless learning is the goal) and what is supported by that host.

Well actually I am not ignorant at all. In reality I am quite intelligent. Spent 8 years as an intelligence analyst, dabbled in cryptography, and now I am finishing up a bachelors degree in computer science. :D
Back to the matter at hand. As Roy pointed out I am the PHP forum moderator and I do know PHP rather well. I do also program in ASP. And as Roy also pointed out I put a BIG GRIN smiley there to indicate a response that is partially biased as I AM the PHP forum moderator.
So please Morgoth check yourself before you call anyone else ignorant.
As for which language is better we have had these discussions before. ASP which uses primarily VBScript has a greater learning curve than PHP. ASP/VB/VBA/VBscript resembles no other common languages such as C++, C, Java, Javascript or PHP. As for capability there isn't really anything one can do that the other can't.

You only left the person with a Yes and a smilie face (which is all fairness could be taken in many ways)
You didn't even bother to point out why he should go php over asp... Maybe he already knows VB and didn't know VB and ASP are somewhat the same...
So it is a little ignorant.
Stop baiting Spankster!
Ignorant, ig·no·rant adj.
1. Lacking education or knowledge.
2. Showing or arising from a lack of education or knowledge: an ignorant mistake.
3. Unaware or uninformed.
Note, non of these apply to Spanky, although simply saying "yes" doesn't tell the whole story it's fair to say that if the need be Spookster and other members can go into the pros and cons of asp and php until the cows come home. It's a wide ranging subject and if a member wishes to we can advise based on their situation and needs.
Yours truly

Well you are entitled to your own opinion even if nobody else seems to think the same as you.
I will however now remind you of one of our forum rules:

I apologize for my actions.
But I still feel mattover-matter should have a full understand of why he should use PHP instead of ASP.

You need to run the code thru a web server and not straight from your c drive. Its because its server side code that you are having the problem. Static html documents (.htm) will always display via any pc drive. ASP needs a web server.

I didn't expect this to turn into a big debate which is off-topic :P
anyway, if you took the time to check my profile you would seen that I know HTML/CSS(not mentioned but a tad of JS and learning). I plan to use apache or whatever to host my own site, iff att lets me. I am in need of a forum(not d/led). A big part of this experience for me is doing it myself. I don't want to say, hey look at my site. and it says coded by ........ I have heard that php is better, but I wanted to ask someone with some facts. I wanted the server-side support on my C:/ because while I do not have a host, I have a folder in which I do all my coding. I wanted to be able to script it all before putting it on the net. I don't want it to say: coming soon or whatnot. Thank you for all the quick replies:thumbsup:
george, keep up the good work!
Edited -: I did not even notice you were the moderator :-}; I did not find you ignorant at all, but maybe that is because I had a big debate to read and did not have a single post to rely on -: /Edited
