1) Project Details: (be as specific as possible):

Ok I am making a fansite for this game called MapleStory
Well this game is not browser based, but they have a ranking system on their website that show's your avater's picture next to your stats / level etc. Here is the ranking website http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Rank/Game&ranktype=TotRank

Anyway what I need to do is allow users on my website to just input their character name on my website, and then have it automaticlly get their avater image off of the ranking website and upload it to mine so that I can display their image on my site without them having to save it themselves from the Ranking site then uploading it to mine.

There is a website which already does this. www.basilmarket.com when you goto My BasilID and then add player. They have an option to upload your picture manually or just automically receive it from the ranking page. So I know its possible.

2) Payment Amount:
Let me know how much you think it will cost

3) Payment method/ details (Paypal, check? Timeline?):
Paypal, ASAP

4) Additional Info (about project or potential bidders):

Have you checked that this is not in violating of the website terms?

It is not violating a website, however it is difficult to do.

It seems like it to me. If those avatars are given by default then by result they are Nexon's IP.

sounds to me like a slightly general term.

The site's terms and condtions are wherre to look so you can be sure not to violate them. It can be a nasty experience/surprise if you get it wrong.

NEXON America Inc. and NEXON Corporation (collective referred to as "NEXON") are the copyright and the trademark owners of this site and all the characters, logos, names and all related indicia contained herein. No portion of this site, including but not limited to the text, images, audio or video, may be used in any manner, or for any purpose, without NEXON'S express written permission, except as provided herein.

That would also include avatars I suppose.

You would think, however there are multiple unrelated sites, that already do this that like i said are unaffiliated.
It is very legal, as long as you do not claim any of it as your own. He wants it taken off maple story (Global i assume?) or nexon's website. and the problem there is that one account can have multiple characters (If that makes since?) and you would have to choose which one to display as the avatar.

No portion of this site, including but not limited to .......

That is very clear. It is unlawful ~ period. The issue is not whether there are other people doing it but whether it is done in line with the terms and conditions. just because there may not yet have been any action taken by the company against those who infringe the terms, is absolutely irrelevant. If they start tomorrow, they could make a collective fortune from all those people who have adopted this 'they've done it so it's OK' attitude.

Absolutely correct.

Jimread if you want to do this project I suggest you contact the website that you will getting these avatars from first and get in writing that it is ok to move on with it. Otherwise it maybe a little annoying to users but it only takes 5 seconds to upload your avatar in your profile.

Also, basilmarket, being an auction site for maplestory, benefits Nexon. Nexon lacks their own auction system, and to get rid of basilmarket would be to degrade the playing experience for their own game. Basilmarket may even have permission from nexon.
