Been on the web about 8 years now
HTML, Javascript, and CGI are becoming passe sorta.
I figure I should get into ASP, or PHP or XML

I need a different setup from my host to do this, right?
Any thoughts, ideas, would be appreciated

XML isnt really a standalone language, but it should be of intrest to you to learn.
ASP or PHP - cant make a comment without being biased - i use PHP.

what sorta platform or ??? do I need to request of my host to use PHP?
Can you also use ASP on the same server?

I'm told ya can't use CGI and PHP so figured I'd ask.

firstly CGI is not a language, it is a way of accessing scripts - most people use CGI to access Perl scripts though you could easily run pretty much any serverside language through CGI.

rather than trying to pick a language and then get your host to support that, why not just ask your host exactly which languages they support and then try learning those languages.

if im not mistaken, php can be run on most any machine.

im guessing ASP must be run on a windows machine.

ASP is made for windows NT servers (known as IIS servers). Chilisoft have made ASP for unix servers, but is pretty carp. :)

PHP is free and hence the savings are passed onto the customers... go for PHP. Its easier to use too :)

THere are loads of hosts that do PHP.. just take a look at hostrocket.com for example :)
