setting current images backgrounds to transparent?

Hi All,

Ok i have some images which i need to have transparent backgrouds because at the moment they stick out like sore thumbs as they have a white background and its placed on a brown webpage.

i have tried the background eraser tool in photoshop but it leaves the image looking bitty as not all the white is removed, is there a way to get the tool to remove all colours except black?

p.s the images have no layers so i can set the transparency of the layer to 0 as the image would go also

I think GIMP's Magic Wand tool (http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-fuzzy-select.html) would be enough.
