I am trying to add my gmail account to the BTInternet account using Outlook 2007. Nothing that I do works. Any ideas welcome. For once Googling has let me down. I have tried mail.btinternet.com and pop.gmail.com/smtp.gmail.com all with no success.

Any help welcome.

Frank

The answer lay with btinternet. They have a procedure, but it was a little tortuous and I failed to understand it, All OK now.:D

So you are trying to setup pop access to your gmail account through Outlook? I think the easiest thing to do would be to just forward your gmail to your btinternet account.

Before you can access your gmail account via IMAP or POP you need to enable remote access on your account. It is in the settings if you log into your gmail account.

Once you've done that, they have a tutorial on how you need to configure outlook. It basically boils down to: You need to enable SSL and the SMTP server requires authentication for outgoing email.

Is the fact that I am using OPEN DNS a problem. My ISP is British Telecom and btinternet.com is their email channel. Basically, I do not understand the inter action between the various channels. I will give what you both say a try, keeping my fingers crossed.

Back tothe grindstone Frank.

I have tried the method suggested by oracleguy without success. Can you enlarge on what you suggest Aero. Sorry to be so thick.

Thanks to you both,

Frank

Yes, to the letter. I'll just have to stop using gmail. I think it is btinternet that is refusing to process them outward.

Hi,
you need to follow the instructions from Google as you did - but when they say use same outgoing server settings - you can't - not with BT - not with Orange, not with Tiscali - and not with most other ISP's in the UK.

They have set blocks so mail must go out through their servers when you use POP3. You will still get replies and via your gmail account. When it comes to configuring the outgoing mail server you need to select rwquires authentication and you need to enter your BT username and your BT password - this should allow you to send mail as well as recieve it. Good luck - unless you gave up already..

Thanks, I'll have another go later.

enter your BT username and your BT password

Which username and which password. That's the question.
I have four email accounts with BT.

I thought everything was OK but I still getting error 553 inspite of doing everything asked of me.

A total dead loss. Maybe its a Windows 7 thing.
