View Full Version : Notepad removes html formatting

Hi - I'm a novice when it comes to writing in HTML, so please be gentle...

I'm using a PC, Windows OS XP Service Pack 2.

I had a file written in HTML that appears just fine online. The original file was written using Dreamweaver MX (2004).

I wanted to add something to the file, so I pulled it up using Notepad. After I hit "Save" in Notepad, the file went from being nicely formatted (e.g. each <tr> <p> etc was demarcated on a separate line, so it was easier to read the HTML code) to suddenly all collapsing onto a single line. It was as if someone had taken out all the hard returns: or imagine all of this text with no carriage returns between any of the paragraphs. It makes it much more difficult to read the resulting HTML text, because suddenly it's one long string of text.

Has anyone else had trouble with this, and is there any way to avoid this in the future? It's still workable, it's just a lot to slog through now.

The file was already in .htm format, so it's not a saving as ".txt" vs saving as ".htm" issue, I don't believe.

Thanks!

Red

yeh I have found that from time to time. I use wordpad because, often, it shows the text as you have descirbed it used to be.

btw, you should visit updates.microsoft.com (I think) so you can d'l service pack 3.

Hi iguana, I'd recommend notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net), which is far superior than normal notepad, and it's free.

It sounds like, you need to turn on "word wrap". i use notepad most times(depending on what im doing) and i never have this problem, the format stays the same. format/word wrap

notepad++ is a million times better, if not more coding orientated

If you have Dreamweaver MX, you can "fix" the formatting by opening the file and selecting Apply Source Formatting from the Commands menu.

Hi frank, have you downloaded the npp.5.2.Installer.exe (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/notepad-plus/npp.5.2.Installer.exe?modtime=1234116619&big_mirror=0) file?
(If not, hope the above link would help)

Frank that link posted by abduraooft does download notepad++ and when it opens there is a default file to read. it has the same text as you have just posted. simply close that file (not the top right X but the one below it), and open a new file in the normal manner.

Thanks bazz, I said I had a blind spot. Works fine now.

Oh for some new eyes!

Thanks to all of you and my apologies for the mix-up.
Foolishly I decided to re-start the post afresh so as not to interfere with the OP's, but I got muddled. Sorry.

I got new eyes ten years ago (I guess they aren't so new now). They helped a lot. My new lenses are fixed distance so I can't focus on anything that isn't 18" away (I chose that as I live on the computer instead of distance vision).

If you haven't had it done yet, the operation is a snap. Tiny cut in the top of the eye, vacuum out the old lense after cutting it into small pieces and then insert the new plastic one.

Not quite so easy for me.
I have developing cataracts and also age related macular degeneration. Add to that the fact that I have had a burst vein on my right retina, you will see that I have a long way to go to get good vision.
Trying to play my keyboard and read the music is quite another thing too. Ten leger lines instead of five in each stave. Accidentals are quite hilarious. I see everything twice in each eye horizontal wise. Coding can be a nightmare.

But I am still not downhearted. 83 years old. I'll soon be starting on my second century.
That's if the politicians don'e wreck everything in the meantime.

Frank

Nil desperandum!
