Is there any utility that can assess download time ? I mean a utility, which tells me while I am downloading what the transfer rate is, either graphically or textually?

get a download manager/accelerator and it will tell you, I think gozilla is a good one but there are many others.

thanks scroots,

but download managers are only of use if you are downloading programmes.

I got a slow internet connection and I sometimes wonder if a webpage is downloading at all. is there some utility that will tell me if a page is being downloaded or whether the connecton is severed?

www.speed411.com will tell your what your current connection speed is. Maybe check that site at various times to get an average.

if you get opera it shows all the info along the bottom when the page is loading like number of images and percentage done, time taken, speed etc.

you can get a free version it just has an advert window in it, the ads change every 15mins or so. apart from my opera has broke (i didn`t hack it or crack it or use any other means to remove ads) and it doesn`t show ads.

I have opera 6 and its good.
you will love opera when you get going
