yup - the usual question.

http://www.teckis.com -- barfus in Opera - ok in newish IE/Moz

the main question (other than any useful notes on appearance/usability) is the membership stakes (some people join, though they don't tend to setup all their preferences to get the pages how they want them).
So...
what can I do to increase membership takers?
what can I do to encourage members to actually use the site how it should be used?

Did you actually include a no-right-click and no-view-source script? If so: please... whaddaya take me for?
Nicely done with the CSS layout, by the way, although I wasn't impressed by all the inline styles.
As for your other questions: dunno, perhaps yet another news site just isn't what people are looking for.

Well, you will be happy to know that it looks as nice in Opera 7 as in anything else I tried. Or it will, if you add 'padding: 0' to your body rule. ;)

As for getting more people to register, giving away free tee-shirts with the text 'meow is cool' is the way to go, man. :D

no-right-click == definitely not!

no-view-source == accidental due to server scripting of some pages - doesn't happen much though and if I knew what was doing it I'd stop it from doing it.

I hate no-right-click and no-view-source scripts as much as any self respecting designer and honestly do not know what server trickery sometimes stops IE from displaying source.

Free T-shirts = would if I had the dosh.

Opera - my version drops some of the content below the float:right div on some pages - dunon why.

Cheers for looking anyway. :)

Weird... anyway, i'll get back to your site, try and register, fool around with the different knobs 'n switches, and let you know lateron.
Questions in advance: Teckis? How do i translate that to: news? What i was wondering last night trying to get to sleep anyway: how do people looking for news find your site? What do they search for / on, and what gets them to you?

6 does. 7 doesn't (on windows, obviously). But you need to get rid of the body padding. Opera doesn't apply margin to body by default, it applies padding.

And you should really think about those tees. :D

teckis == news - in the same way that linux is an OS and tiscali is an ISP

I think that domain names don't have to be especially indicative of the sites subject matter. Plus I find typing teckis to be easier than anotherusefulnewsportaltypesite.com

if google had become an ISP rather than SE, maybe googling would mean something different.

meow - you did have to quote the line with the misspelling
anyway - when I update the mod_rewrite for Opera, I'll add the padding bit.
and when I win the lottery, I'll give away the T-shirts.

Good point!

I hate to burst your bubble, but before "Teckising" is up there with "Googling", many a left-click mouse button will be worn out... :D
But, i get the picture: just an easy-to-remember, catchy name.

Not server trickery, it's just another bug in IE 5.x which doesn't seem to happen any more since I went to IE 6.
