View Full Version : I miss the sidebar with Windows 7. I now have a partial solution!

I have generally liked the new Windows 7, but I miss the sidebar. Not for the gadgets because I can still have them. The problem is that when I ordered my new PC - a Dell XMS 420 - I ordered a 22" monitor that turned out to be a wide-angle one.

With Vista, the sidebar filled the space at the side and the webpage sat nicely to the left of it. Now, the sidebar is not there, the width stretches to fill the space and the aspect ratio is wrong.
I don't want to set the width in pixels as I normally want it to fill the display.

Any suggestions to overcome this without losing flexibility would be welcomed.

Can google desktop's sidebar function the same way? It's the closest thing I can think of.

Thank you Brad, but Google say that it is not compatible.
It's just for Vista and XP at present.

But did you try installing it? Vista and Windows 7 are very similar under the hood.

Yes Aero, I did try but Google would not let me. The panel that told me it was incompatible did not give any way out except exit.

I found this (http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/30/workaround-to-run-windows-vista-bar-style-sidebar-in-windows-7/)on Google, after an initial failure, I got it to work with the few icons presented afterwards. However, I cannot add any more. It appears to accept them, but they do not show on screen and are not listed with the other gadgets.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Any ideas any one.

I have found the reason for the gadgets not working. According to MS the 32 bit gadgets will not work with the 64 bit versions except for the few 64 bit gadgets that they supply with Windows 7.

However, all is well on my 32 bit laptop so I have reverted to Windows 7 32 bit on my Dell PC as well. (I must be a sucker for punishment!) That now works properly. If anybody wants to try the sidebar with windows 7. The zip download is not available at present but I have saved it to my PC fortunately.

Windows 7 Ultimate. 32bit.

Try HERE (http://www.ziddu.com/downloadfile/3042059/Win7-Sidebar-Fix.zip.html). for the fix.
