TextPad has a search files function. I'd bet that Notepad++ does as well. NoteTab does.

Windows has 'issues' when searching for text in files. I assume you're using *.php for example as you're file, and when you enter text it doesn't find it (even though you know its there).
Its a flaw in Windows XP. Here is a registry hack that will help:

Don't forget to backup you're registry in case something goes wrong, it only takes a few minutes to do. I'd recommend finding some quick documentation from Window's site on how to restore it from the CLI in case something goes horribly wrong and you need to restore it (shouldn't be a problem with the persistencehandler though). And of course, once you've added the edits you will need to restart you're PC for them to take effect.
Hope this helps!
