Hi,

I am considering installing unbuntu and need to know if the following software programs will work on it.

filezilla,
enginesite perl editor
adaware
spybot s&d

maybe two of those aren't necessary?

Have any of you got any views on better programs to use on ubuntu?

Filezilla definitely will. The Perl editor is seemingly offered only in Windows binaries. You may have some luck under Wine with these.

oooh quick response CyanLight; thank you.

my pc is set up such that there is the c: drive and a d: drive as two partitions. there is also an f: drive on its own hdd.

The plan is to have my own stuff separate from the OS so if it were to crash (I have been getting used to it lately), my stuff is safe on a totaly separate hdd.

Should I put ubuntu on the d: drive then so that C: is windoze, D: is ubuntu and my stuff is on F:?

I dual boot Ubuntu using Wubi, which I find favourable. This makes a virtual hard disk and boots off that from the Windows Boot Manager. It's a total <insert profanity here>-take to remove Ubuntu when it's written directly to the HDD, as Grub is a pain in the...neck...to get rid of. When it's using Wubi, it's easily uninstallable if you don't like it. I would use this at least till you decide you want to go ahead and make it a permenant solution. You can access the Wubi installer by running the Ubuntu Live CD from within Windows.

I shall keep it as the removeable program by using wubi however, I hope to make it or some other flavour of linux my 'default' OS.

Grub is about the best boot loader you can use. Ubuntu as will most Linux flavors use Grub when you install them. As for your original question you don't need adaware or spybot on Linux. As for the other two you can run them via Wine if not there are typically plenty of Linux free open source equivalents.

Grub isn't any good when you only want to load a Windows OS, though, as it requires extra work, hence my dislike of using it unless it's a machine which has Linux and will always have Linux.

I suppose I could have been more explicit in my first sentence but I thought it was clear that I was talking about loading Linux OS's from my second sentence.

Why would you use Grub if you are only loading Windows OS's anyways. Windows has it's own bootloader specifically for Windows.

And what extra work? As compared to what...not using the windows boot loader that is already installed? I guess then yes it would be extra work.

OK, so I d'l wubi and 'installed' ubuntu - except it didn't install. yes, I got past the point where I enter my password and then where I have to reboot. But when it rebooted, it stopped at an undescribable white-text-on-black, page.

It gave me the option to load it onto c: where windows is. maybe I shouldn't have taken that option so I shall try the f: drive which was plan A.

I was talking about an instance in which the user decided to get rid of a Linux distribution if he didn't like it. The Grub bootloader remains behind.

You can just use fixmbr command in Windows to restore the Windows boot loader. Not really a big deal.

that means that if your windows crash you will lose both, linux and windows and you can't recover anything.
Don't blame grub only because you don't like it for some reason.

install synaptic and use it to install/unistall any package you need, come with ubuntu and do what you need. Synaptic will provide enought information to find what you want.

I suggest gftp instead of filezilla and quanta or scite instead of enginesite perl editor
best regards
