View Full Version : Have there ever been problems with jerk posters on this forum?

I am involved in few other forums, and I have to say that CF ranks up there with UtterAccess in terms of quality of posts and people who are genuinely interested in helping others.

On three other forums in which I'm involved, there are a handful of posters who enjoy picking arguments, stating their opinions and argue when others disagree, and berating others who have less knowledge or skill. It ticks me off because the thread quality suffers, the original poster's question is often not answered, and the whole conversation often gets abandoned, especially when two of more posters carry on the conversation for more than 5 or 6 posts.

On another forum, there were nine concurrent threads where two posters have slammed each other for multiple days. I politely asked both of them to stick to the topic or quit posting, after which both of them fired shots at me and told me to mind my own business.

I finally reported them to the moderator. I won't mention the forums, but they have been around for years and have millions of posts. Perhaps the moderators are too busy, perhaps they don't care... I don't know.

I just don't see that happening here and was curious at to why that might be.

Moderators, have you ever had problems like this at CF? How to you keep things sane here? I'm curious because a friend of mine and I have talked about running a forum but are not really interested in being baby-sitters for jerks like I mentioned above. Your thoughts?

Generally there is no problems with that here. Occasionally spam threads but the users report them and moderators remove them.
The staff here are very good, active and know there roles and make sure people keep to the rules.
Infractions are handed out to offenders and repeat offenders often get banned due to 20 infraction points.
You can see about your infractions here in your user CP.
apart from that Google it.
Hope this helps.

Sure we have but those people don't last long around here. It is actually fairly rare that we have to deal with disgruntled members though. Spam is a whole different issue but even that gets cleaned up promptly.

We have the Spookster (http://codingforums.com/member.php?u=5) who throws any unruly visitors in the dungeons.

We also just happen to have a lot of "short bus" special people like Brando whom, if you insulted, would have no idea :D

Each night I like to dream of new ways to ban people!

Occasionally I will even ban an innocent as an example to the rest to keep them in line.

What was your name again?

Why not just send Cyan over to their house. They will open the door for her. Then Brandoe rushes in and kneecaps them. Best they don't goof around after that.

Contrary to popular opinion, Cyan himself is male. His avatar leads many astray, though...

On topic: How does this forum stay troll- and flame-free? It's been blessed with positive dynamic stability.

I feel so abused. =(

It's KT Tunstall, in case anyone was wondering.

I have seen a flame war in my time, but the mods quickly wiped it up. There a very small number of certain...unpleasant members of the forum whom I would not be unhappy to see the back of, whose posts seem to be rather single-subjected and are very, very similar to trolling. I can't prove anything, though, but I'm watching. Always watching. (Especially Jeremy and Matt. You've been warned. =P)

Alas, there's not much one can do except give negative reputation. Here's to natural selection!

If your forum ideas are in anyway to overlap with CF, then you should stick around here instead of pursuing them. ;) That would be an effective way of keeping CF as good as it gets.

I can't add much else to what people have said already. The mods are good (coz they haven't chased me yet) and the vast majority of repeat-posters are very patient and helpful. spam gets removed asap and dopey newcomers soon get bored and leave. At elast that's how it loooks to me. Maybe this already happens :D

Funny posts, everyone. Glad to see that there's such a good sense of humor.

After being a lurker for years, I decided to join UtterAccess about 7 months ago to be a regular forum member. It was a really positive experience, so I joined CF shortly after. Again, a really positive experience. I am most active in these two because I think the original posters appreciate a genuine response and it's fun to see the creative answers that others give.

In the three other forums I mentioned above, the arrogance and impatience of some members is just appalling. I think they need to "get some action" once in a while and chill out. Life's to short to b###h and moan all the time. Either help out, shut up, or add a bit of levity to the thread.

As for our forum idea... it's would be for an unrelated topic - creating adoption lifebooks for adopted children. My wife has been very active in the adoption community and is probably considered one of the top three experts in the U.S. on the subject. It's a difficult subject and one where lots of families need lots of assistance with normalizing the experience of being an adopted child. Based on my interaction with the adoptive family community (we have two children from Guatemala), I would hope that it would be a pretty tame group. Probably the biggest problem would be spam.

Thanks for all your feedback!

One other thing that matters [from my mod exp elsewhere] - good forums usually have some mature members, and those usually do know how to use Report Post feature, certainly a thing helping to moderate. Once you get your few trusty mods, and some trusty members, things go smoothly most of the time.

They just fear my wrath. They also fear the day I carry out a successful coup against WA. He has thus far been able to thwart my attempts. One day he will not always be so lucky. Muahahahaha!!

I can attest to the heavy infractive hand of the Spookster. That the infractions he gave me were part of a larger cleanup of a thread that went bad and therefore not necessarily completely warranted (think: Army basic training when one guy screws up the whole company gets burned) is completely irrelevant; Spookster needs not back up his infractions with reason.

And yes I will probably spend the next week in the dungeon for this outburst. :(

I was just fumigating for pests. :D

In my book there is no such thing as an innocent bystander. They could have ducked therefore they are guilty!
