Drop down menu problem

I'm new to Flash and trying to learn. Just finished making my nav bar with drop down menu. When the menu drops down and the new buttons are revealed, how do I get the new buttons to control what frame the movie is on in the main timeline rather then the timeline of the button itself. I can put in getURL and that works, but I need the menu to take me to various specific frames of the timeline.

First it helps to show code so we know what you are working with, but here are two ways to manuver the maintimeline. This is AS2, which I presume you are using since you mention the getURL (not available in AS3).

or
_root.gotoAndStop(#);
