I have a webpage at http://manoamano.org/donate/donate2.html that
shows that total amount donated with Google Checkout.
Example: "$7,440 donated so far"
I would like to update the dollar value ($7,440) on the page whenever
a new donation is submitted through Google Checkout.
I can't figure out how to trigger the javascript when the Checkout is
submitted, also I would need to get the variable value from the form
input box. This needs to get updated on the server side so that the new amount appears when the page is accessed in the future.

As you say, this is really a server-side issue.

Is this not the correct forum to ask about server-side scripting? If not, where should I ask?

No, this is the Javascript (client-side) forum. Ask a mod to move your post over to the PHP forum.

Sorry, I thought I was posting in "server-side"
