XML data islands are an IE-proprietary extension to HTML and are not considered part of XHTML.

As far as XSL goes, that's my real weak point.

My question to you is, is XML really appropriate for this task? Or would a different kind of database, such as PHP/MySQL, work better for you?

XML might be appropriate, particularly if you intend for other machines to use that data (not necessarily just humans reading it).
