Hi, my website is stanschipdip.com . According to hostmonster stats I'm getting 2,000 hits per day. I'm near the top on the first page of google and yahoo when putting in "chip dip". I'm just not getting any sales. Could you give some constructive criticism as to what I should do? Thanks. :confused:

Well, the hits are a good thing. Your near the top of Google and Yahoo which is brilliant for online sales. However, not being harsh, your website doesn't look professional. I would be put off ordering from you if I saw that site. There is no identifying logo that fits in with the site, and the images are from the 90s. With a proper redesign I think you could boost your sales by quite a lot.

If not, I strongly advise a redesign.

I agree ...
The site looks horrible ... and I'm not trying to be offensive ... that's the fact.

You should also consider sending people free samples.
They would register and a free sample(s) to one household.

I know of a maple syrup family operation in New England that give
away free samples and now, they cannot keep up with orders anymore.

You can find free CSS templates that are (free) and look modern and very nice.
It would just require some small customizations.

Nothing wrong with PayPal ... so you can keep that,
but don't have links that are dead ends (like the PayPal logo).

A face-lift for the site, better graphics, and free samples ...
you'll have more sales than product (which is a good thing).

Always bear in mind that it is the quality and usefulness of the content and the ease of navigation through it that are of the greatest importance to most web page users.

james is absolutely correct ...

This particular case does have the affect of "a guy selling out of his garage" ...
so the look is really important. The content should pertain to what you're selling,
and nothing else. Make people want to buy it, and offer the free sample(s) if they
register their name, email and home address. They should at least get something
for their effort, and you'll get sales ... I guarantee it.

First you find the CSS template that you really like.
It will have the layout you want, the color scheme, the "look" that you want.

Then you download that template.
It consists of the main HTML file and one or more CSS files plus photos and images.
Most of us do our coding by hand, but you could use Dreamweaver ... dig into the
code and see how they display the images. Substitute your own images and text.

It's important to have as many good, clear, close-up photos of the products as
you can. A really nice professional graphic logo would be good (that could be done
extra by a professional graphic artist ... www.graphic3.net something like that?)

If someone could draw you a good Caricature drawing of Stan, that would be good.
The picture you have now really looks bad.


If you could come up with the template you like (by browsing the internet)
See Millenia's list. And you can provide some good photos, and some graphics,
someone like myself could do the coding for you for a token fee ... or in exchange
for a dozen or so of Stan's Chip Dips.

PM me if interested.

You would also have to provide the programmer with all of the FTP account info,
and possibly the PayPal info, unless you can do the PayPal part yourself.

I can't add much to the comments above, except to stress that the design desperately needs an upgrade. keep it simple, clear, easily navigable and with good content. free samples work too - I know that from a friend who locally makes homemade jams and chutneys. one taste and he invariable gets a sale, mostly of more than one items and usually of more than one flavour.

If your product 'sells itself', then free samples are definately the way to go. it will pay for itself.

I would definetely agree with that you should consider a site redesign. make sure that the graphics that you choose is high resolution optimized for the web.

honestly, you are selling a food item, and the site makes it seem like you are mixing this stuff up in your kitchen. You should show a high res pic of your dip in a sealed container so people know it is done right.

Regarding your number of hits... make sure that these are human visitor hits and now just spiders crawling your site. I had a client ask me a similar question regarding his ZenCart based site. He was getting something like 4000 hits per day. After adding Google Analytics and tracking human visitors via JavaScript, this number went down to 4-6 unique visits per day.

I agree with the concerns others have posted about site design. However, looking at the results in Google and Yahoo for the term "chip dip", I don't think this is a good choice of keywords for your site. In my opinion, the direct competition for your type of product on this term is weak. In some cases, being found where your competitors are not can be a really good thing - I dominate over 2 dozen search terms and get qualified leads to my site just because I'm the only one that shows up that's relevant. Unfortunately, that's not the case here.

I ran this term through a keyword tool which reported back that only 40,500 searches for the term "chip dip" were performed on this term in the month of December. All other derivations, such as "chip dips" and "chip dip recipe", were all under 2000 per month or there wasn't enough data to report.

By comparison, a word such as "appetizers" had 673,000 searches in December. kraftsfoods.com and appetizerstogo.com are putting multiple PPC ads for that "appetizers". I think it's much more valuable. It will take more time to rank on a more competitive phrase, and on-site factors will not be enough to carry the day on this one.

You'll have much better results going after multiple higher-value words and using some good SEO techniques along the way.

Well, in the SEO point of view, I think you need to add an <h1> tag at the top to show the title of the site. (You may check the outline by FF's developer toolbar, which says [Missing Heading] as of now)

.. and the second page has got only 3 links in the navigation list and the last page has only 2. Is that intentional?

I've nothing to add about the old site, except to agree with everything that's already been said. The new site is a vast improvement.

Be wary of "hits", one hit does not equal one visitor. For example every image on your site which is downloaded counts as a hit. The figure you need to look at is unique visitors, remembering that some of those will be spiders.
