Firstly, I'm not sure if I should be using a ink-jet or laser printer. Secondly, which would be the best brand? I've owned 3 HP printers and none of them have lasted for more than 2 1/2 or 3 years each. My family uses them with me, so that may be the problem. I need to buy another printer but I'm not sure if I should just buy a new HP or (and keep it for myself) or buy a new brand.

It seems to be a crap shoot.
I have a LJ1100 that has lasted many years and just bought a Brother HL21 that needed service after 50 days. Brother HL21 seems to be expensive on the toner side.
as to the first question; I prefer to have a laser (cost) for B&W and a ink (quality) for color photo printing.

I've had excellent results with HP printers. In my office, I have (and regularly use) 2 HP Laserjets that are about 7 or 8 years old. At home, my laserjet is 2 years old and my inkjet about 6 or 7 years. No complaints or problems with any of them.

What kind of stuff do you normally print? Is it mostly black and white or do you print a lot of color?

Check out some of these brands, Canon Pixma iP90, MP610 and Pixma Pro9500, HP’s LaserJet 1020, OfficeJet J6480 All-in-One, and DeskJet 9800, the HL-2170W from Brother, Lexmark X6570, Epson Stylus Photo 1400 and Stylus Pro 3800.

I would go with the Canon Pixma iP90.
I've used it for much longer than any other printer, and nothing has gone wrong yet. (Hopefully not in the near future) Seems I can't remember my other printer brands, it's not much of a comparison, however I'd just like to tell you about my good experiences with it :).
I'd trust the Canon brand.

I agree with Oracle here, totally depends on what you need to print.
If you only need to print text documents with the occasional pic, dont go crazy.

I have a couple of HPs which have always done the job - I do find the cartridges expensive though and we go through them very quickly

Thanks for your help guys. I ended up buying HL-2140W Brother printer - DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE. I thought it was a good buy. The things says it has a paper jam every other time I print something. Open it up, and it usually never has a jam. Cheap crap. Learned my lesson. Stick w/ more reliable brand - HP? *sigh*

HP is getting pretty good reviews lately. In particular everybody says HP's ink system beats the rest by a long shot, especially if you're a home user that don't print something except when you have to. Canon is still better at photographic quality though. I've seen four of these reviews in the pre-Christmas newspapers, and those two pretty much trounced the opposition.
