WMP Visualizer question

What is needed program and knowledge wise to make a windows media player visualizer...could i screw around with a simple one just to learn? i searched google but could not find any good results and comments would be great.

EDIT: i have microsoft visual studio 2008

Update: i got the SDK installed on my computer and i can pick WMP plug-in....it lets me choose what kind of plug-in to make and i choose 'visualizer' but then it shuts down and a error box pops up that says 'objects expected'.

any help would be great :confused:
