i have been using *nix for about ten years and i want to know if i can install it on a mac notebook(powerbook)

i have *never* had anything to do with mac and have no idea of the config of them but i have the cahnce to get one very cheap and only 1yr old but i want to run mdk9 or debian opposed to mac os

any help would be gr8

I actually asked a mac tech rep at a tech conference here about 1 year ago about that very same thing. They said that the hardware only supports Mac OS and not Windows, *nix or anything else. He went on some rant about how Mac is a hardware company and not a software company and so on and that's why they don't support *nix OSs.

Also, have you seen the default shell on OS X? yuck!

Mac OS X itself is a version of BSD,with a X window system for the GUI.
You can also install GNU/Linux on a Mac,but you will need a distribution made for the Mac,such as Yellow Dog.

Or MandrakePPC. :)

Linux is no problem on Mac hardware.
