Suddenly my laptop will not log on to the internet as it does not initialise the router. I can get on all right via the 'connect to' facility and although I click 'remember' and also 'connect automatically', it rudely ignores me.

Any procedure to teach it who is boss, very welcome.

I have never used vista, and never intend to, but:

Is there like a default setting? and is you're computer trying to connect to the wrong thing when it boots up? Have a look at the settings if you can and see what the default internet connector is.

Thanks folks for the help.

Borntooslow;

The trouble is that the laptop has been working for months even since the SP1 update. This happened overnight. Using the web all day. Shut down. Problem the next morning. Router is available on the Laptop from the connect to in the control panel and works fine until switched off. PC continues to work OK from power up without any other procedure..

Going through the procedure you give, I could not find the final GUID reference either on my PC or Laptop. I think the trouble is elsewhere.
Virus and adware checks are negative.

Still trying.

Maybe you have to re-order your networks.

I am on my work PC and it runs XP so off the top of my head...

go to re-order wireless networks (maybe remove hyphen) > right click your preffered network > clcik connect automatically > enter you pasphrase > enjoy the internet...i hope.

It doesn't literally say {GUID}. You are suppose to choose the one that corresponds to your adapter. Each one lists the current DHCPIpAddress. To find out the ip address given to you by your router you must do an ipconfig under command prompt. After getting the IP you will then know what adapter is connected to the DHCP server.

Aero.

Doing ipconfig just flashes a screen at me which disappears so fast I am unable to read it.

The puzzling thing is that If I do a connect to from the start button, and then input the password, it connects without trouble and is OK until I switchoff. When I log out I click the buttons which say Save and Run automatically which the PC cheefully ignores.

This laptop has behaved perfectly since I purchased it.

WhenI look at the network on screen, the router is included.

I think perhaps I will have to re-install Vista Home Premium. Happy days.
At least Dell provide a software facility to do this.:D

a bit hastey on a clean install i think.

Are you running ipconfig \all directly from start > run > cmd or the start run button. To stop it flashing up you need to run directly from cmd.

if you want to run directly from start > run > cmd /k ipconfig /all

Yes. I made a mistake. I tried it correctly, but what am I supposed to do with the information?

I have been working on this for three whole days. The big laugh is, the Dell repair doesn't work either. It refuses to re-format the drive. Who on earth writes these programs? I'll try what you suggest shortly and get back to let you what did/didn't happen.:D

You were supposed to get the IP address and after doing that find the adapter in the registry that matched that ip address. This would be your {GUID} that you couldn't find.

Thanks again Aero,

I have resolved the issue by re-installing the OS. It's OK now except that I now have to get the network going and the remote printer available.

I tried to add the laptop with the usb drive. It was partly successful, but not the printer. Ah well! it keeps me busy.

I don't see that as being a solution to the issue. I see it as taking the easy way out. Don't mess with stuff if you don't know what you are doing. I know you say you aren't messing things up but it always seems that you have problems with your systems after upgrading to a new OS or something. Hire someone who knows what they are doing.

Sorry Aero, but this happened overnight. The Laptop was OK when put to bed but would not work in the morning. I could get on to the internet using "Connect to" and inputting the password. But I could not get it to log on automatically.

None of the hardware is faulty, it worked immediately I had re-installed the OS. and continues to do so. The procedures suggested were time consuming and did not appear to help. Re-installing the OS was quick and cured the problem.

If you go to "Connect to" from the START. Select the wireless router,(There are twenty-seven at my address) and then input the code. It goes to a window accepting them and has two options . One is to save the network details and the other is to make it automatic. It does not work. The computer goes on to the internet OK, but when rebooted, it has not taken any notice of ones choices and the same time consuming process is required again. That suggests to me that there is a fault in the OS for some reason or another.
Hence I decided that re-installing was the best and quickest option.

I have had four PC's before I started with Vista and I have never had any problems other than a virus or two. The previous problem with my new PC was due to the fact that the monitor did not show the set up screen. Even the first two Dell engineers did not know that.

Took all but 2 minutes. You didn't do them properly anyways so you don't know if they would have helped or not.

Well, it's OK now Aero. Many thanks for all your help, I really do appreciate it. Please make allowances for an old man in his dotage. I'm not as sharp as I was when I was 21. I'm doing my best.

Kind regards to all the many who help me.

This is from the PC. just for interest. What is relevant?

The IPv4 address was relevant. You would have selected one of the many {GUID} numbers that had a match to the IPv4 address.
