i have read in a book about php that you must install php in your computer first before you read this book, it illustrates how to download php and install it...
i didn't download the php, i only operate the apache, and i wrote the first example in this book:

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

and it is worked with out problems.
so, how did it work with out installing php?
or why we should download the php?

you must have PHP :D

did you download from apache.org or perhaps you downloaded a bundle with apache and PHP...

note you dont need to start php if it runs as an apache module or CGI as apache starts it for you.

From Php.net (http://php.net):

What is PHP?

PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML. If you are new to PHP and want to get some idea of how it works, try the introductory tutorial (http://www.php.net/tut.php) . After that, check out the online manual (http://www.php.net/docs.php), and the example archive sites and some of the other resources available in the links section (http://www.php.net/links.php).

I hope this helps.
