My questions are: 1)Can I get the data from sql database onto a web page? 2) Can I accomplish this using html, java, or java script? 3) Where should I go, or what terms should I be googling to study up?

I want to get the data from sql into either a web page or an applet. The end result will probably be a graph or small math transformation. I just don't know where to begin on accomplishing this. I've been googling and have seen everything from ajax, php, java, javascript, java server-lets, asp, olap. Its just super unclear to me how I can do this using the languages I already know.

So I'll preface this by stating that I took a class for sql DBM and I'm handy with html.

I am learning javascript and java on my own and am up to arrays and methods/functions. No object modeling. Still a baby in these two.

I've been using search terms "parse sql to java" "data driven applet" with no luck..

Regards!

I've never used java, but you can create a JSP web application.

Read more about Java Server Pages here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JavaServer_Pages)

Also check out www.connectionstrings.com and choose your database type to get a sample connection string.

PHP/ASP is probably the easiest to learn (pick which one based on whether your server is windows or linux). Java works on both, but in my opinion is a bit trickier.

HTML, and JavaScript have no ability to connect with a Database without another language. They can work with another language to make it happen.

Now Java, I don't know much about it, but I think its not the solution as I believe it might be able to do some SQL but I don't see many Java applets that just grab SQL data. As was mentioned above JSP (which runs Java on the server instead of on the local computer) may be an option and I presume would be easy to learn from your stance with Java.

Otherwise, PHP is my suggestion. To connect to a database you need a programming language that runs on the server, which PHP does (or ASP if you like .net) and has functions for database connections.

Personally, I would get a book rather than just googling things. I know so much data is online now, but books are still the best way to learn indepth about something.

I suggest PHP as well. Java can be bulky and you will need to find a jsp server. To even begin making web applications with java you need have a long way to go.
