View Full Version : Random Whitespace

Hey guys.

Can anyone tell me why my website (http://www.uhcc.co.uk/index.php) when viewed in older versions of MSIE, has a big chunk of random whitespace below the menu?

Any help appreciated!

Hi bennyboywonder,

This might be the case of diffrent css and css2 approaches that I recently found out my self (THANK YOU IE!! :rolleyes:).

earlier versions of IE don't like css2 approaches such as:

padding:10px 11px 12px 13px;

but rather

so your #body{padding:65px 25px 25px 25px;} might need to be looked at.
Keep in mind that the css2 method of padding:x x x x; is not wrong its just IE is always WAY BEHIND the curve in css updates and sometimes thinks they are clever by making up their own css rules... shake a fist and Microsoft!!

Not quite true, I think.

For me, the best way to track such issues is, to put some test borders (better to use different colours) around the main elements in the context.

Here, just put a border around #body, say 1px solid #fff; and another around your #menu, say border:1px solid #f00;.

Now refresh your page and see the exact positions of your elements in both browsers.

IE automatically clears your float, where as you need to explicitly specify the clear for Firefox and similar browsers. Thus

#body { padding:65px 25px 25px 25px;
border:1px solid #fff;
would show a uniform display in both browser(though there might be another clearing issue for the border of #menu).

Now you may remove the borders and find a suitable padding(shorthand should work in IE6+, not sure about the older ones) for your #body.

Welcome to the forum. You might want to consider clicking the "thanks" button when someone like abduraooft gives excellent advice. Being unpaid, a clap on the back is the next best alternative.

You do have some errors. (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uhcc.co.uk%2Findex.php&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0)
