Who may tell me more about iframe?

iframe label is a flexible element in page make, but I don't know it exactly, except properties width,height,src... what characteristic does it have? how can I add border on it and paint border some color? it seem border= & bordercolor= is not effective, and how many properties may be changed in JS programme?
