Hi. I have a windows 98 machine at home. Not used it for a while. Silly me has forgotten this windows password. Can I get in any other way. I have files on there I do not want to loose so a reinstall from the boot disc is not an option.

If it is win98 you should just be able to hit cancel and continue on... If you are trying to connect to a network then it might be different (depended upon if it is a domain or workgroup)...

No, he said Windows password. If you can't hit cancel (Windows has that trusting theory of "no one said you couldn't log on without a password, so I assume you can go ahead and do as you please"). But here's a very dirty trick. Boot up in DOS (press F8 at startup and select command prompt or use a boot disk. Then
CD\WINDOWS
REN *.PWL *.FOX
Just rename all the pwl (password list) files to something else. This will cause windows to come up with the old log on screen, but nomatter what name you put in, it will be allowed since it has no password info. In fact, it might even forget to ask for a password and you can reconfigure it. Check this trick out for an example of some Windows 98 hacks:
(you can't click it, so copy the address and paste it to throw off the referrer)

I can`t get your password but i can get your files.
i`ll check or what for confirmation if i am allowed to post the method first.

my method will only get you your files and not your password, and it will create a new user in a dodgy way.

right here you go (mod it if necessary, i understand why if you do)
1)click cancel at logon so it appears with the default windows settings/desktop
2)go into the control pannel and creat a new user with a choosen password
for example the new user is called joebloggs
3)go to C:\windows\profiles\old username\
and copy all the files inside that folder to
C:\windows\profiles\joebloggs\
NOTE:copying these files may take along time (20mins) to speed it up don`t include your tempory internet files

then the user joebloggs will have identical files as your old username, and the password should remain as you set it for the joebloggs account.
