Are these fonts built into internet explorer?

I've searched a bit on the topic, but its still not clear...

Ultimately, I'd like to know if its safe to use these fonts as a replacement for images on buttons.

They're built into Windows ... but not everyone uses windows.

So no - it isn't a good idea to use them on the internet.

It appears that webdings was included with IE-4, according to the following (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/embedding/weft/weft14.htm)

--------------------------------------------------------Quote:
Users who have installed Internet Explorer 4.0 will have added Verdana, Comic Sans MS, Arial Black, Impact and Webdings to their system...
---------------------------------------------------------

Maybe this means that webdings would work without Windows, but then again, just using this font doesn't give me much to choose from.

I'm trying really hard not to use images at all, and it seems to be painting me into a corner :p

what about something like "font-family: webdings, windings, verdana, sans-serif" or whatever... then if a user doesnt have webdings or windings it'll use another font...?

Well, the 'dings' serve as icons for button controls, such as "print", so in the absence of those fonts, there would just be meaningless characters.

You could also upload the font to your server, and instead of just using <font face="webdings"> use <font face="http://yourserver.com/webdings.ttf"> of whatever the file extension is.

The article is old, but still pertinent.

It would just depend on whether the 196k of the two fonts outweighed the # of images I would need to use otherwise...
