Hi guys:
Recently there's been some interesting challenges posted in the JS Programming category. I just got a couple copies of the book "Webmaster In a Nutshell (O'Reilly 3rd edition)" intended originally for a casual giveaway on JK.com. However, it might be more interesting to offer them as prizes of some sort for a scripting competition on CF.com instead.
What do you guys think? JavaScript seems to be the obvious choice, but any other ideas would be welcomed as well. Please be specific in your idea; and think of things such as how easy it would be to determine a winner, who will be the judge etc. Remember, there are only a maximum of 2 copies of the book available, and if possible, I'd like to spread them out over two competitions.
That's cool. Just don't make it be a trivial competition... not like any simple algorithm or something.
I'd personally like to see some crazy DOM scripting (with IE hacks, if wanted) competitions. :)
Bump DHTML up the next level, and there is enough talent haunting these forums to do that. Of course, one of the things I've been attempting lately is replacing DHTML effects with pure CSS... which is neat in itself.
But yeah, something along a nice piece of coding requiring some complexity, good algorithm(s), and producing a very neat effect is a must.

Me too :) I love that thing where you can turn an unordered-list into a side-opening menu system. That could be extended further with some nifty DOM scripting, to do things like re-write the CSS to switch orientation on the fly (and make any of it work in IE)
So I'd vote for a competition along the lines of "create [something] using any hybrid variety of techniques, that fulfils a functional remit" with points awarded for creativity, ingenuity, efficiency, degrading, accessibility. And coolness, obviously :cool:
It would also be ultra-cool if the competition could be handicapped - so that people at all stages of learning have a chance of winning, not just the most experienced; or perhaps different categories, with a winner in each.

"there are clear winners already"... and the vast majority of the codingforums.com community wouldnt be able to have a bash too... but then again... if its easy your gonna have 50 poeple all claiming that they should have the book... and listing extra features of their script that makes it elite...
so my thoughts would be more towards what everyone could have a go at... and seeming as everyone is here about some aspect of web design... why not a design perhaps? at least then 50% of the forumites are talented enough to take part. although once one person has done it then everyone will then be doing the same with some little extra features. p'raps a redesign of the famous javascriptkit... but then again that site still looks fine...

Thanks guys. Since there are two books, two ideas can both be adopted. For one of them, what about a banner/logo design contest? The contest can also serve the highlight the new Graphics category recently added...

ionsurge 02-15-2003, 11:48 AM I know of another forum, who themselves put up a competition where the users designed templates for the forums, and there were a lot of responses as a result, mind you he was giving away a years subscription and a vb Board too.
If you want a banner, you will obviously need to set restrictions, as a lot of people can work with it, and make it what you want it to be. However, you will need to specify size limites, content, file-types, etc - seeing as you would probably not want a 4mb flash banner/logo.
Anyhow it is up to you. With scripting, very very few people know it, and that is why and how you automatically reduce those who will enter into it - like redhead has mentioned already.
Doing a design contest will open it up - yes. I am with that, but there would be many restrictions that will make others think that there is no point. For example, it is hard to create a decent logo/banner with a size less than 12kb, which is moderate for a logo/banner.
Anyhow, like I always say, it is up to you, and you alone really, and it is your choice as to whether you decide to take in our views, and that is something that I totally respect.
However, I may take it up... if it is for a banner/logo that is,

:) Know what you need? A link button. The ones you have are nice but more like banners. I think more people would be happy to put a button up. The popular size seems to be 88*31 or close to that.

I think I remember Sc00by_Snacks something like that once.. there was a site where you had a map and you could jot down a point on it and put your name there with a bit of text and stuff.
