Can anyone tell me what would be the best language to do the following:
i work in a manufacturing plant that has a shift patterns for technicians and i work standard 5 day week training them.
i was thinking of writing an application that i could open every morning and it would tell me the names of the people that are working that day and that are working that night and the areas they work in and the levels of training they have. the list of technicians are stored in an sql server with the qualifications they have
i was thinking of using c++ of am i way off. can anyone advise me? let me know if you need anymore information.

It sounds like you could just use MS Excel for this. If you wanted to make it a bit more complicated for learning purposes.. You could either use a web language php or asp, im not sure if c++ would just be a bit to complex to do something that sounds simple.(unless your already good at c++ and know how to do it already)
Visual basic might help i know theres a Wizard(on vb 6) that will actually take you through the steps of setting up an application to connect to a sql server.
To me for a work schedule this would seem a bit overkill though, as it should easily enough be setup in MS Access or MS Excel.
Any reason that you want to make the program, instead of a quick fix like excel or access?

thanks for the reply. i already have an excel done out for it but i want to be able to install it on several pc's so that different engineers will be able to see the data

Do you already know how you can achieve this in c++ or any other programming language?
I think i would personally make up a php webpage on the server (if a web server is running on it aswell) that will just pull out the data for the day. which will be a pretty simpe solution.
What have you decided to do?

C++ is overkill IMO.
Sounds like you want a client / server style application, or straight webbased. C++ can do this, but its more difficult than in web developed languages, specifically C#, ASP.net or PHP. I'd look at using C#, PHP or Java for this purpose (java since you can create a client / server app with mobile devices quite easily :D), or there is a new technology by MS, SharePoint I think its called, which allows collaborative sharing of documents online - I assure you that it will handle excel without any troubles. This will be ASP.NET of course.
I don't think that a single C++ course will give you the knowledge of the language to do this.
