obviously, what you're taken to is not the image you get a thumbnail for... how is this accomplished?

It is done by the server looking at the referer. It has nothing to do with JavaScript.

You've posted this topic twicen now in two areas... plus, as A1ien51 said, it has nothing todo with Javascript, but I guess you didn't know that.
