Building a portfolio

I've just started trying to earn some money with my coding skills, but as of yet I've very little experience in any actually jobs, so I don't really have anything to put in a portfolio. And, to be honest, I'm not really sure what all I should do with a portfolio. Can anyone please give me some tips on what to do in regards to a portfolio? And maybe some examples of good/beginning portfolios?

You should just make up examples of work. Make websites or layouts that is pure fiction to show your skills.
