I currently have Nortin AntiVirus 2007. It's expiring within the week. I went to the store to buy the $20 Nortin AntiVirus 2008 and the guy was a jerk. Instead of just giving it to me, he told me that I should go do my homework and I could get better antivirus for free off the internet. Then I went to another store and a girl told me, "You get what you pay for." She recommended Trend Micro I think it was? Anyway, that was like $40. I'm really only looking to spend $20 but I want to get something good. Any suggestions? Whether it be I buy it or download it? I don't want trials. I want software that's legal and 100% full proof. I appreciate it!

I'll probably never use NAV again after my experience with it a few years ago. Unbelievably slow and resource hungry, to the point of unusable (2 different versions). I recommend getting a security suite that includes anti virus, spyware, and a firewall all in one. It'll be more expensive than $20, but added together you are saving. I use ZoneAlarm Internet Security (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/catalog_main.jsp). No complaints so far.

Just download AVG Free version. It's all you need.

Yeah, back when I had Windows, AVG was the best for me.

My boyfriend has AVG and up until recently he thought it was all free, but now it's telling him about buying it and renewals and crap. Is it absolutely 100% free, no strings attached?

You can use the Free Version free forever.

Yes it is 100% free. He probably just downloaded the non free version when he upgraded it.

If you aren't using your computer to make money you can get Avast Home for free. It works just the same as the Pro version but the whole making money thing with your computer decides which Avast version you need. The only thing you need to do is reregister each year with them to get a new key.

I think now a days people need more antispyware than antivirus unless you are not visting and downloading from illegal stuff.

For those people I just suggest they switch to using Firefox so they are not so prone to getting said spyware.

Then again, those people shouldn't be downloading stuff illegally.

Firefox is mostly used by persons who are in technical field. So there are enough people out there using IE . They don't know about Firefox but they do know about Antiviruses or Antispywares.

and usually when they buy computer , the sales person easily convince them for buying Antivirus or antispyware , rather than saying download Firefox :D

those people shouldn't be downloading stuff illegally.

I don't said about watching illegal stuff :D

Anyone tried clamwin (http://www.clamwin.com/)?

ClamWin is a Free Antivirus program for Microsoft Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003 and Vista.
ClamWin Free Antivirus comes with an easy installer and open source code. You may download and use it absolutely free of charge.

I tried clamwin before but it lacks a real time scanner which is a draw back IMO.

I use AVG (free) + spybot s&d...

Kaspersky is really good too, probably the best.

Don't buy NAV, Mcfee, trendmicro, etc...
These companies mess it up by adding useless features that ruin your computer.

I wouldn't really recommend zonealarm if you are not a somewhat advanced computer user.

Well I was with avg for ages but recently, it started messing about. and that was the paid-for version.

Now I have followed Aero's advice and am very happy with avast! Still not quite sure when it does a scan but I do like that it doesn't annoy me by slowing the pc down.

I think you need to set up automated scans. Other than that its all on-access scanning. The settings are pretty thorough as well.

Yeh, I had it for a couple of months and then things started to go wrong - sudden crashing and reboot, freezing and such-like. I then got a new HDD, installed xp, then the avg and my software programs and it showe the same problems. un-installed avg and all was well. now have avast! and no problems yet.

Strange old things, computers.

nod32 is pretty good. It's lightweight and does not eat up your system. Though, some people say it's real time scanning isn't the best. Sophos is decent as well, that is what I'm using right now, at least on my laptop. It recently started crashing my desktop, on startup, so I've had to disable the services. Not sure what's going, probably a conflict with another program.

For firewalls, the tech dep at my college recommends Kerio Personal Firewall. I haven't used it myself, but a couple of my friends say you should have a bit of experience with computers if you want to get the most out of it. Apparently, it's pretty good if you are experienced with computer systems.

I use COMODO Firewall Pro. Even though it has the word "Pro" in it, it is free but it seems to do the job. It has a thing called installation mode so if you are installing something new you can set it to this mode so it doesn't keep asking you about every file. It can remember your choices just as any firewall should. Its also one of the better firewalls that I've seen that works with Windows Vista. If you want to get your hands dirty there is a user interface that lets you do more.
