The following code has been checked using the w3c's validation tool and is valid. It's just the start of a webpage I'm beginning to build and works in IE, but in Firefox, the onmouseover events do not work (everything else does)! Can anyone help?

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
<head>
<title>Welcome to Widcombe Baptist Church</title>
</head>
<body>
<img src="banner\banner.png" alt="Navigation Bar" width="800" height="57" border="0" usemap="#banner" />
<map name="banner" id="banner">
<area shape="rect" coords="0,0,205,56" alt="Home" onmouseover="Home" href="http://www.widcombe.org" />
<area shape="rect" coords="206,0,320,55" alt="Who we are" onmouseover="Who we are" href="http://www.widcombe.org/whoweare/whoweare_main.htm" />
</map>
</body>
</html>

Are you looking for title attribute ?

<area shape="rect" coords="0,0,205,56" alt="Home" title="Home" href="http://www.widcombe.org" />
<area shape="rect" coords="206,0,320,55" alt="Who we are" title="Who we are" href="http://www.widcombe.org/whoweare/whoweare_main.htm" />
</map>

ALT only displays a tooltip in IE, not in FF. The previous poster is correct that TITLE will provide the tooltip for both browsers.

Actually alt is supposed to display some alternate content in the absence of an image (so as to see a link to click) and title is for displaying a tooltip. But stupid(?) IE displays a tooltip for alt attribute too.
