View Full Version : Text placement - which method is better?

I want to have an image go down the left side of my page, with text to the right of it. I have been guided to faux columns and understand the priciple there.

My question is this - which is easier/better?

-Use CSS to set up faux columns to get the image in the left column [and repeating] and the text in the right column

-Use CSS to set the side strip as my background image and augment the image to have white space to the right - and in the same CSS document, use CSS to set the text margin. So I'm essentially just working with one column then.

My only concern is that the side strip image is 113 pixels long [which would repeat]. If I make it, say, 113 pixels long and 800 pixels wide [with most of that white so the text can display] I'm inviting longer download times for my page, right, as that file is bigger?

I'd appreciate any advice [or code ;-)] which might help. Thank you!

I would choose your second option because it will be simpler to maintain. 800x113 may not be that big of an image depending on content, compression, and color depth.
