Hi,
I'm working on a site that is meant to be a database of media assets (sounds, photos, 3d models, etc) that are freely available to anyone for any use, commercial or otherwise.
The focus of the site in particular is to provide users with these assets without any confusion as to licensing - if someone chooses to contribute an asset to the site, they must be willing to allow others to use it in any way, modify it, and only optionally credit them. Otherwise, they're submission, no matter how good, will be rejected. Similarly, if a user finds something they want to use on the site, they can use it without worrying about royalties, licensing, and credit for every little asset in their project. I've looked at the Creative Commons Licenses, and they seem pretty good for this, but I've been looking for better alternatives.
I've considered public domain, but I would be a bit worried that entrepreneurial individuals could just download all the assets from my site, and host them elsewhere because, well, its public domain. So I want to protect against people stealing from my site for their sites.
So, essentially, I want people to be able to freely download assets and use them in any way in their projects, but I also don't want other similar websites to have free-reign to steal my content.
I'm afraid I'm not too savvy about licensing, but does anyone know whether a Public Domain license would put me in danger of this? Would a CC license be appropriate? Or are their more appropriate licenses out there to consider? My website would have everything from art to sound to code, but I'm mostly concerned about the art and sound stuff.
Thanks!
