Are there browsers that support CSS2? I see all the talk on w3.org but it seems to be all a myth.

Mozilla (Netscape 6, Netscape 7, Phoenix, K-meleon, Galeon, Beonex, Chimera, etc)

Opera (5 and up)

Konqueror (Safari)

IE5/Mac


In reality, it is only IE6/Win that doesn't do a good job of supporting it.

It's not like IEWin doesn't support ANY of it even if its support is limited.

So IE doesn't support it? Do you think it will anytime soon? I won't start using it if I can't test what I write. And also, I would not even bother until I am able to update my IE and have known that the most commonly used IE (new and fairly old in the future) supports it since I favor IE users on my site and don't bother with NetScape's DOM. My site stats show that a very small percentage

Well ... it cuts both ways :

jkd is, in one respect, absolutely right - win IE's CSS 2 implemention is severely broken; particularly sad is the lack of > selectors, but that's merely one of a catalogue of examples :rolleyes:

On the other hand, since most people use IE it makes sense to code with IE as your primary audience. If visual discrepancies are inevitable, most people err towards IE rather than mozilla. It has to be said - while IE may lack standards compliance, it tramps all over mozilla in stability and comparative lack of rendering bugs (and it has multimedia filters :)).

It's rather a shame that none of the browser families 'has it all', but it's as it is. Don't let the fact of this put you off using the most modern techniques; simply accept that pixel-perfect consistency is not gonna happen, and that some of the stuff you want to do will only work in a subset of browsers.

I'm sure you have a very good point. But I keep hearing about Mozilla but don't know where to get it or know anyone that uses it. In fact, my site stats probably caterorize it as "other". But sometimes the better stuff doesn't get the most popularity. Compare ZIP and RAR formats and you'll see what I mean. I got a 4 mb WAV file compressed to 300 KB in RAR and 3.5 mb in ZIP. What exactly has to be done to get this stuff better known? So where do I find Mozilla? I'll try it.

Mozilla is the most DOM-compliant browser, excellent CSS and also a pretty good all-round tool.

There's also a number of browsers with the mozilla gecko engine, but a different interface. Phoenix (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/) is a particular favourite of mine

It's not either or. IE does support CSS2 up to a limit.

It totally lacks support for some properies and others are buggy but of course you can use CSS2 in live pages.

Since I switched to GNU/Linux (8 months ago),Mozilla has never crashed (and I use alpha and beta versions too).Rendering bugs?Internet Explorer can't even render dotted borders (!),but renders them as dashed.Is that a rendering bug or does IE not even fully support CSS1?
