is it safe to use .png files within websites now where transparency is required?
or not recommended?

Yes its pretty safe. There are issues in IE 5.5-IE6 with support, and you can either ignore that compatibility issue or apply this script to your site which will provide a fix for it.

Great link, didn't even know that kind of thing existed.
PNGs really are required in the more modern types of layouts - GIFs just don't cut it anymore in this crazy Web 2.0 world.

There are quite a few different scripts which will do this, but this one has been great for me.
