I have two computers running off an always on connection through a router. One is using wireless the other is plugged in directly. How can I set up a local network that will allow me to transfer files between the two computers quickly? One of my windows installs is getting mighty moody and it is time to backup whatever I don't want to be lost. Trouble is that I don't have an external drive anymore and it would take far too many DVDs. I need to transfer about 100 GB of material total. What is the best way to do this?

Only thing I lack is a cross-over cable but if it would really make things easier/faster I could get one.

If both computers are already connected through your router to your internet connection, they are already networked. You can create a share on the computer you want to save stuff onto and then connect to it from the other computer using the first computer's IP address.

Don't both systems need to be part of the same workgroup first?

Shouldn't need to be for file sharing.
