View Full Version : HTML bgsound question

I want to use music as a background in my site, but I do not want it to take up a lot of bandwidth. I know that you can remotely link to anothers computer using the f:\\\ instead of http://. Does accessing the music file on anothers computer take up bandwidth on my site, or no?
No, linking to an external file (whether music or not) will not consume your own site's bandwidth. However, if you're looking to link off of another site's file(s) without their explicit consent, this is both immoral and considered bandwidth "leeching." I hope this isn't what you were planning to do.
When a visitor goes to your site and the visitor's browser reads the "bgsound" url, it automatically connects to whatever url you have put there. If it's a url of your site, then it will download from your site, if it is a url from some other place, the visitor will download the music from that other place.
Mind the following:
1- If you use a url that connects to "F:\\music.mp3" for instance, and your visitor does not have a F: hard disk on his/her computer, they wont listen to the music, because the browser will go look for the music on their computer, not yours =).
2- If you use a url that connects to another site other than yours, the visitor will still have to download the music from that other site to listen to it, and that might still be slow for them. It just won't overload your server, but your site can still be slow to the visitor, as usually the downloading of background music files makes the page render very slowly on the client side.

Yes, ok. Well the idea was to have my users download another file from one of my other servers, so that they could then listen to it. They would be knowingly dl'ing it, so is it considered theft?

it'd probably be best to ask the person whose server your gonna be downloading from... if someone just did that to me i would call it "leeching"...

No, I'm not going to run it off of a server. I am going to have a zip file on another server of mine that users can download the music files from. Then, when the site needs to access them, it will run off of the users computer. They know that it will be run off of their computer. The question is, is it considered legal?

Umm...Why would you do that? No matter...If this is legit, just put the files in your own site and forget it. :p

seems like a ... different plan.
sounds legal to me :)
