Hi, everyone.

I've been struggling with a buggy OS for quite a while now; I upgraded to Win 2K from 98 about a year ago, and it's never worked properly.

When I did the upgrade, I tried to reboot and the system told me that a certain number of .CAT files couldn't be found. So, I went to my other system and copied the files from the Win 2K CD to a floppy and told the system to get them there. On the CD they were listed as .CA_ files, so I just renamed them.

Now, in the course of trying to repair the system, I come across a page on MS's web site saying that the .CA_ files need to be expanded to the system, which I never did when I copied them over.

I still have a list of the files I copied; should I try to expand each one into its proper place from the CD? Or will this cause further problems (which I would really like to avoid)?

Any help appreciated.

You should ALWAYS do a fresh install, no upgrades ever work smoothly apart from maybe 98 to ME. If at all possible I'd re-install.

Hey, Mouse. Most people say this, and I'm beginning to think it's a good idea. But something about wiping the entire drive just scares the be-jebus out of me. As you can propably tell, I'm not that great with OSs and such...

...and how has anyone ever avoided a buggy OS when upgrading to ME? Isn't that a forgone conclusion? ;)

Anyhoo, anyone else care to comment on the expansion tactic?

After 15yrs, I can honestly say that upgrading is by far the best way to keep your system running, huh, *mouse whispering in ear* OHHHHHH, I see... I thought this was about hardware, not Operating Systems... Well in that case, you should, whenever possible, upgrade by doing a fresh install... ;)
